Selected Golf Courses – Lisbon Estoril Coast

Oitavos Dunes is next to the beach resort of Cascais in a cliff-top location and quickly became a permanent fixture on The European Tour Though not a true links course, it has many links-like characteristics, not the least of which is the exposure to sea breezes, which can quickly gust to strong winds. It boasts some impressive sand dunes, especially along the middle holes where it plays through a spectacular dunescape. There are gorgeous views of ocean and mountains from practically every hole.
(Par 71: 6300 metres)

Quinta da Marinha is a fine golf course 22 miles west of Lisbon at Cascais, it has 18 holes of unadulterated natural surroundings and major challenges. Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Senior, it is an open sandy course with spectacular views over views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra Mountains. It is a mix of woodland and links holes and is unusual in having five par five's and six par three holes it has. It has hosted the PGA Seniors Tour Championship.
(Par 71: 5870 metres)

Penha Longa Atlantic Course is a tough challenge and has played host to numerous competitions including the Portuguese Open. It has breathtaking views over the ocean with Estoril and Cascais to the South and the Sintra hills to the North. It is an imaginative design from Robert Trent Jones Jr. and a layout that has a special appeal to the low handicappers who will be calling on all of their skills to navigate the numerous hazards and steep hills. Forward tees are available for players of more modest ability to enjoy their round. Strong winds from the Atlantic add to the challenge and demand a creative approach to your game.
(Par 72: 6290 metres)

The Praia d'el Rey is located at Obidos and is a true links course with magnificent ocean views, one of the best courses on mainland Europe. The course is full of surprises: on the 2nd hole, you play with a view towards the nature reserve of the Berlengas Islands; on the 12th, the Atlantic Ocean is your constant companion; while, on the 14th, golfers have to contend with the changing moods of the wind, and, on the 17th, it is a full 570 metres to the green. After all the excitement of your round, you’ll find a restaurant waiting for you with a panoramic view over the sea, priding itself on its professional and genuinely personalised service.

Selected Golf Courses – South and East of Lisbon

Troia Golf Club is a magnificent links course stretching over dunes, cliffs and pinewoods on an isolated peninsula between the ocean and the estuary of the River Sado, with the mountains of Arrábida in the background. It is 28 miles south of Lisbon, near Setubul and ranks high in the European top courses. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr., who considered the 3rd here to be amongst the best par 4´s he has ever designed and including it amongst the 18 holes of his ideal course. White sand is to be found everywhere, not only in the bunkers that protect the small, narrow greens, but also in many of the rough areas. There are postage stamp greens, tight fairways and seaside holes to remind you of famous courses in Scotland and England. (Par72: 6320 metres).

Clube de Campo da Aroeira is on the coast just 30 minutes from the centre of Lisbon. The #1 course is well established and has hosted the Portuguese Open. Designed by Frank Pinnink it is a superb test, through a floral pine forest, (Par 72: 6044 metres). The #2 course was designed by Donald Steel who took care to comply with European Tour recommendations and designed a course with future Portuguese Opens in mind. Its 18 long fairways are well provided with water hazards by five strategically placed lakes. The flat nature of the fairways is made more challenging by well placed bunkers, some of which are "pot bunkers". The first hole is a par-4 that demands a very accurate second shot as a water hazard waits to the left and a large bunker to the right. Two other holes worth a special mention are the eleventh and the fourteenth. (Par 72: 6367 metres)

Quinta de Peru is in the Azeitao region between the castles of Sesimbra and Setubal, which is well known for its palaces, wines and cheeses.. The first three holes are tricky with a par-5, a longish par-3 and then a short but difficult par-4. Still in the first nine of the course the number 7 (178 metre par-3 hole) has an attractive lake guarding the front of its green. In the back nine the 17th green is also approached over a water hazard requiring an accurate shot from the player.
(Par 72: 6036 metres)

Ribagolfe is 30 minutes drive east of Lisbon city centre and has two courses in a quiet and peaceful location, set in a forest of cork oaks. The design of Ribagolfe 1 makes full use of the sweeping undulations of the site, providing many spectacular golf holes across valleys and lakes. The fairways are lined with the typical cork trees famous to the Alentejo region. (Par 72: 6456 metres) Ribagolfe 2 is mainly designed as a course for the Members although visitors are allowed to play. The holes are laid out over undulating ground with sufficient water hazards and bunkers to challenge most golfers. The fairways run through the same cork trees forest as #1.
