Royal Lytham

This tour covers all courses in England that have staged the 'Open Championship', fortunately they are in just two locations. There are four English courses that are currently on the Open Championship roster, they are Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham, Royal Liverpool and Royal St George's. Two others that are close to Royal St George's on the Kent coast hosted the Open Championship earlier years, Royal Cinque Ports and Prince's. There are other great links courses in England that are highly regarded but do not have the supporting infrastructure of roads, accommodation and space at the courses.
Call toll free 1-888-529-2448 to discuss alternative length of stay, golf, transport or accommodation options.
Day 1 Arrive at Manchester or a London airport, drive to Canterbury for four nights at the Abode Hotel.
Day 2

Play Royal Cinque Ports a natural links with large sand dunes, undulating fairways and wind a major factor. As the course runs outward parallel to the pebble beach, this can present quite a problem as the sea wall and beach are integral parts of the course. The rough is covered in coarse marram grass which is especially punitive between May and August. The greens are some of the largest, finest and fastest in England.

Day 3 Play Prince's, it shares the same dunes as Royal St George's, it is a traditional links with rippled fairways, deep bunkers and hazardous rough. The Open was played here in 1932 and was won by Gene Sarazen who continued in great form to win all four major tournaments.
Day 4 Play Royal St George's, it has hosted fourteen Open Championships. The Links provides a severe test for even the greatest of golfers and the fact that only four Open winners, Bill Rogers in 1981, Greg Norman in 1993, Ben Curtis in 2003, and Darren Clarke in 2011 have managed to be under par after 72 holes, speaks for itself.
Day 5

Drive North to the Wirral Peninsula and play Royal Liverpool, built in 1869, it is the oldest of all the English seaside courses with the exception of Westward Ho! in Devon. In 2014 it will host its 12th Open Championship. Proceed to the Vincent Hotel at Southport for 3 nights.

Day 6 Play Royal Birkdale, always high in the world rankings and generally #1 in England. Nine Open Championships have been held here, the last in 2008.
Day 7 Play Royal Lytham, one of the premier links courses in the world, host to ten Open Championships and two Ryder Cups, the 2012 Open will be held here. The famous amateur Bobby Jones won the first of his three Opens here and after sailing back to the USA on the Aquitania was given a ticker tape reception in New York.

Golf courses

Royal St Georges G.C. In 1894 the club hosted the first Open Championship to be played outside of Scotland. Royal patronage was granted in 1902 when the Prince of Wales became club captain. It is the truest link you will find in all England, close to the ocean, overlooking a bay, any kind of wind can make this man-size test even tougher. There is sweeping rough, daunting bunkers and huge sand hills. It is not a traditional out and back links but is broadly circular in a loose figure of eight. All of the holes are different and memorable. On the 4th a bunker is cut into a huge sand dune, this is the tallest and deepest bunker in the U.K. In 2011 Darren Clarke won the 14th Open to be played here. (7204 yards, par 70)
Prince's Golf Club is a classic, championship course, which shares the same range of dunes as Royal St George's and has a great pedigree. It has held an Open in 1932, when Gene Sarazen led from start to finish. The course was a battle-training ground during the Second World War. However a new 27-hole layout was built in 1950, retaining many of the original greens, and the course has retained its reputation as a stiff test, the Amateur Championship was held here in 2006. The Dunes and the Shores nines are the Championship course and there is lots of variety. The odd 2nd involves a huge dog-leg around some woodland to an awkward platform green, while the 4th and the 8th share an enormous double green. (7228 yards, Par 72).

Royal Cinque Ports lies behind the beach at Deal amongst formidable sand dunes. It is a former Open links, venue for the Championship in 1909 and again in 1920, when a stiff sea breeze, destroyed a 13 shot halfway lead for Abe Mitchell over the Scot George Duncan who took the trophy with an excellent 72 in the final round. There are some awkward holes, such as the short par-four 6th, almost a 90-degree dog-leg, but it's a 260 yards carry from the tee to cut the corner. It is the best type of links with hummocks and swales following the natural swirls and eddies of the landscape. It is fun and creative as well as challenging. You have to think about each shot and work out how you are going to play it. (7006 yards, Par 72)

Royal Liverpool, known as Hoylake links can be beautiful, uplifting, awe-inspiring and, on occasion, soul-destroying. They were created to be a demanding test of golf and remain so. They lie at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Great Britain. Built in 1869, it is the oldest of all the English seaside courses with the exception of Westward Ho! in Devon. In 1871 the Club was granted its Royal designation thanks to the patronage of His Royal Highness 'The Duke of Connaught'. It is on the current rota for staging the Open Championship. This championship course offers a good mixture of par 3, 4 and 5 holes with varying degrees of menace. The fairways can be undulating, deceptively flat and sometimes narrow. The greens are of the highest quality. Undoubtedly Hoylake poses many challenges and should be especially attractive to golfers of some proficiency. (6900 yards, Par 73)

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to ten Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments. Bobby Jones won the first of his three Opens here and after sailing back to the USA on the Aquitania was given a ticker tape reception in New York. It is not a conventionally beautiful golf course, but it has a perfect combination of width of fairways, length of rough and pace and quality of greens. Long hitters do not have a big advantage because there are relatively few holes where you can carry the trouble. It is hard to scramble a good score, after all, there are 206 bunkers peppering the Fairways and surrounding the Greens. It may not be the longest of courses but it is one where careful thought and accurate shots are required.(7118 yards, Par 70)

The Royal Birkdale G.C. in Southport, was formed in 1889 and is ranked No.1 in England. The club has hosted nine Open Championships and the Ryder Cup twice. Famous winners include Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson and Mark O Meara. The fairways are flat bottomed valleys between towering dunes and from the tee there is generally a clear view of the task ahead. It can be very difficult when the wind is strong and the average player can struggle from some tees to reach the fairway. On the 15th hole, a plaque commemorates Arnold Palmer's great shot in appealing weather conditions, on the way to his Open win 1961. (6817 yards, par 72)
