Golf courses
Formby Golf Club is a true championship links course unlike any other. Running through the mature sand dunes and pinewoods of Formby the course will challenge you at every shot; accuracy is always at a premium here. The combination of well protected greens, heather bordering rough and challenging tee shots means Formby is a course of magnificent contrasts and is known for the quality of the front nine. The club is unique in Britain because membership is only available to men, however Formby Ladies Golf Club is located on the same links. (7061 yards, par 72)
Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club is a championship links with a profusion of heather and gorse providing a challenging and immensely enjoyable experience. It has host 2 Ryder Cup matches, many prestigious championships and is a final qualifying course for The Open. All the holes are of championship standard but if one had to be singled out it would, be the sixteenth. This famous hole has a great hill and bunkers, lined with railway sleepers and is a cunning trap, catching poor second shots. It is called 'Gumbleys', after a gentleman who spent some time in there! (6836 yards, par 72)
Hillside Golf Course runs alongside Royal Birkdale meandering through the same stretch of majestic sandhills and tranquil pinewoods. The back nine is really special and often compared to Ballybunion as the holes meander through giant dunes. Many of the holes have elevated tees with fantastic views over the Irish Sea. After playing the course, Greg Norman wrote to the Club saying that "The back nine were the best in Britain", while Jack Nicklaus described the course as "A wild looking links". The club has hosted Professional and Amateur Championships including the European PGA. (7029 yards, par 72)
Royal Liverpool, known as Hoylake links can be beautiful, uplifting, awe-inspiring and, on occasion, soul-destroying. They were created to be a demanding test of golf and remain so. They lie at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Great Britain. Built in 1869, it is the oldest of all the English seaside courses with the exception of Westward Ho! in Devon. In 1871 the Club was granted its Royal designation thanks to the patronage of His Royal Highness 'The Duke of Connaught'. It is on the current rota for staging the Open Championship. This championship course offers a good mixture of par 3, 4 and 5 holes with varying degrees of menace. The fairways can be undulating, deceptively flat and sometimes narrow. The greens are of the highest quality. Undoubtedly Hoylake poses many challenges and should be especially attractive to golfers of some proficiency. (6900 yards, Par 73)
Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to ten Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments. Bobby Jones won the first of his three Opens here and after sailing back to the USA on the Aquitania was given a ticker tape reception in New York. It is not a conventionally beautiful golf course, but it has a perfect combination of width of fairways, length of rough and pace and quality of greens. Long hitters do not have a big advantage because there are relatively few holes where you can carry the trouble. It is hard to scramble a good score, after all, there are 206 bunkers peppering the Fairways and surrounding the Greens. It may not be the longest of courses but it is one where careful thought and accurate shots are required.(7118 yards, Par 70)
The Royal Birkdale G.C. in Southport, was formed in 1889 and is ranked No.1 in England. The club has hosted nine Open Championships and the Ryder Cup twice. Famous winners include Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson and Mark O Meara. The fairways are flat bottomed valleys between towering dunes and from the tee there is generally a clear view of the task ahead. It can be very difficult when the wind is strong and the average player can struggle from some tees to reach the fairway. On the 15th hole, a plaque commemorates Arnold Palmer's great shot in appealing weather conditions, on the way to his Open win 1961. (6817 yards, par 72)
